When Asha Subramanian, MD, MPH, was 13 years old, she started experiencing debilitating pain. “I had a laparoscopy in medical
school, which confirmed that I had endometriosis,” says Dr. Subramanian, a board-certified family physician. Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue that grows on the inside of the uterus grows on the outside and can cause infertility. She eventually had four surgeries to remove the endometriosis tissue and one of her ovaries, but the pain persisted, and she was told that she would likely never have children.
